A long climb removes the natural variation that usually saves you. On rolling roads, you can coast into corners, soft-pedal over crests, draft in a group, or recover on descents. On a real ascent, the pedals keep asking the same question: can you keep producing steady torque while your breathing, temperature, and focus are all under pressure?

That is why climbing training without hills is not simply a matter of getting fitter. It is about building the ability to hold a narrow power range for a long time, often seated, without letting cadence collapse or pacing drift. The rider who handles long climbs well is not always the rider with the biggest short power. It is usually the rider who can keep aerobic pressure high without repeatedly crossing into efforts they cannot pay back.

If you live somewhere flat, the limitation is not terrain. The limitation is that your local roads may not force the specific discipline that climbs impose. Your training has to create that discipline on purpose.

Build sustained power with tempo and threshold blocks

The core of hill climb training for cyclists is sustained aerobic power. That means plenty of work around tempo and threshold, not just hard intervals that look impressive on a file.

Tempo work teaches you to sit on pressure that feels controlled but never casual. It is where you build the durability to keep pedaling after the freshness is gone. Threshold work adds the upper limit: how much power you can hold before the effort becomes unstable.

  • Main set: 5 x 6 minutes at 80-88% of FTP

This is torque practice, not a grinding contest. If your knees feel irritated, your hips rock, or the pedal stroke becomes choppy, stop the low-cadence work and return to normal cadence. 5. Repeatable benchmark session

  • Main set: 1 x 30 minutes at the highest steady power you can hold without turning it into a maximal test, often around upper tempo to sub-threshold
  • Cadence target: your normal climbing cadence, usually smooth and seated rather than forced low
  • Recovery: full easy riding after the benchmark block
  • Progression: repeat under similar conditions every few weeks rather than chasing a personal best every time

Track average power, heart rate response, perceived strain, cadence stability, and how well you fuel. A useful benchmark is not just higher power. It is the same power with less cost, or slightly higher power with the same control.

Use low-cadence work with guardrails

On a climb, especially at lower cadence, each pedal stroke has more load. A trainer can mimic that demand by holding resistance steady and forcing continuous pressure.

For climbing-specific indoor work, use the trainer to create three things:

Continuous pedaling
