Yara Kastelijn wins Vuelta a Burgos 2026 on Lagunas de Neila

Yara Kastelijn won the Vuelta a Burgos 2026, finishing ahead of Évita Muzic in second and Usoa Ostolaza in third on the final GC. Kastelijn also took the mountains classification, while Lorena Wiebes won the points jersey and Shirin van Anrooij won the youth classification.

How Kastelijn won it

The race was ultimately shaped by the contrast between the hilly stages and the final mountain finish. Stage 2, a 122 km hilly stage from Castrojeriz to Bodega Viña Pedrosa in Pedrosa de Duero, went to Lorena Wiebes. Stage 3, another hilly stage over 126 km from Busto de Bureba to Medina de Pomar, was won by Mischa Bredewold.

Those results mattered for the shape of the race, but the decisive GC move came on Stage 4. The 120 km mountain stage from Gumiel de Mercado to Lagunas de Neila was the only listed summit finish, and Kastelijn did exactly what a GC winner has to do on that kind of route: she made the hardest day her day.

Winning the stage to Lagunas de Neila gave Kastelijn the clearest possible route to the overall title. In a four-stage race with limited time to recover from a bad day, the final mountain finish carries extra weight because there is no later terrain to correct the hierarchy. Kastelijn not only survived that selection, she won it, which is why her overall victory reads as a direct product of performance on the race's decisive climb.

Jersey winners

Kastelijn's mountains classification win reinforces the same point. This was not an overall title built around avoiding losses on climbs. It was anchored by being the strongest rider on the terrain that decided the race.

Wiebes' points classification came alongside her Stage 2 win, while Van Anrooij finished as the best young rider. The final podium was Kastelijn, Muzic and Ostolaza, with the race settling in the mountains rather than on the earlier hilly stages.
