Delbove takes control at Langkawi as Snake Pass uncertainty lingers
Langkawi has been defined by repeated lead changes, but Delbove’s Genting Highlands win is the result that actually changed the race shape.
Joris Delbove’s Stage 5 win to Genting Highlands is the result that gives Le Tour de Langkawi its clearest GC shape so far. The race had been moving through repeated lead changes, but a summit finish decided by 2 seconds is a different kind of signal than a same-time top ten or a flat-stage sprint. It tells us where the race finally created separation, and why Delbove’s move into the overall lead matters more than the earlier swaps at the top.
Langkawi turns from speed control to GC separation
Matteo Malucelli owned the early rhythm of the race. He won the flat opening stage from Shah Alam to Kampar, with the top ten on the same time, and took the first GC lead. He then won the flat 189.9 km Stage 3 from Sungai Petani to Kuala Kangsar and finished that day as GC leader. Stage 4 to Cameron Highlands again kept the top ten on the same time, but Malucelli won and moved back into the race lead.
That pattern matters because it shows how much of the opening half of the race was being governed by finishes that rewarded positioning, finishing speed, and time-bonus style outcomes more than durable time gaps. Malucelli’s repeated wins made him the central rider of the first phase, but the GC foundation underneath those leads was relatively fragile because the top riders were often being credited together.
Delbove changed that on Stage 5. Winning at Genting Highlands by 2 seconds and taking the overall lead gave the race a more selective reference point. It was not a large margin, but in a race where multiple stages had produced same-time top tens, even 2 seconds on a summit finish carries more weight than the number suggests. It indicates that the terrain finally forced a measurable split at the front.
De Kleijn and Kyffin keep the stage race open underneath
Arvid De Kleijn has also been a major part of the race’s texture. He won Stage 2, the 145.6km mountain stage to Gunung Jerai, while Malucelli moved into the GC lead, then won Stage 6 in Rembau while the top ten were all credited on the same time and Delbove retained the overall lead.
Stage 7 added another layer, with Zeb Kyffin winning in Batu Pahat, 2 seconds ahead of Nur Aiman Rosli on a flat 159.1 km stage. The key read is that Delbove’s GC position survived the return to flatter terrain after Genting Highlands. Once the race stopped producing decisive GC gaps, the advantage created on the summit finish became the controlling fact.
Snake Pass remains an unresolved Tour de France Femmes variable
Away from Langkawi, Derbyshire County Council says a long-term fix for active Snake Pass landslips is not likely before the Tour de France Femmes visits next summer. For riders and organizers, that is less about a single road note and more about uncertainty on a race route. Active landslips and incomplete long-term repairs create a planning variable, and in elite racing, route certainty is part of performance preparation.
The throughline today is simple: terrain and infrastructure decide races before riders ever sprint or attack. At Langkawi, Genting Highlands produced the decisive GC signal. On Snake Pass, the road itself may still shape the Tour de France Femmes conversation before the race arrives.
