Pogačar starts the Vuelta in red

Tadej Pogačar opened the 2026 Vuelta a España with a narrow victory in Monaco’s technical 9.4-kilometre time trial, beating Ethan Hayter by just 0.09 seconds to take the first red jersey.

That margin is the story. On a short, technical course, there is almost no room for a rider to separate through raw endurance alone. The decisive difference is usually the blend of pacing, cornering, risk management, and the ability to keep speed through sections where others hesitate. Winning by nine-hundredths of a second suggests Pogačar did not dominate the opener so much as execute it with fractionally more precision than Hayter.

For the race, the immediate consequence is simple: Pogačar starts in control of the classification, but the tiny gap also keeps the opening picture tight. Hayter’s near-miss matters because it shows he was close enough to threaten on the same terrain and format, rather than merely benefiting from a broader race scenario.
