Col d'Étache cycling climb profile

Col d'Étache is not a climb that gives much back. On paper, it is 12.8 km long at an average gradient of 12.58%, starting at 1221 m and topping out at 2833 m. That creates a net elevation gain of 1612 m, which tells you the central truth of the climb before any tactical detail: this is a long, steep, high-load effort from bottom to summit.

The HC classification fits the numbers. A climb can feel hard because of length, altitude, irregularity, or gradient. Col d'Étache is defined first by gradient. When the average is already 12.58%, the baseline effort is never really comfortable. The maximum gradient of 26.74% adds a second problem: even if the overall pacing is disciplined, there are sections where simply keeping the pedals turning becomes the limiting factor.

How the gradient unfolds

A rider who can maintain cadence on the average gradient but runs out of gear on the steepest ramps will pay for it twice: first in muscular fatigue, then in the loss of pacing discipline afterward.

If there is a climb where it is better to arrive over-geared in fitness but under-geared mechanically, this is it. Choose a setup that lets you keep turning the pedals when the road hits its hardest pitches, then ride the climb as one continuous effort rather than a sequence of recoveries that may never arrive.
