Mathieu van der Poel wins stage 1 and takes Luxembourg lead

Mathieu van der Poel won the opening stage of the 2026 Skoda Tour de Luxembourg, taking the 157.5km hilly route from Luxembourg-Knuedler to Luxembourg-Fëschmaart in 3h 45' 42'. Pierre Gautherat and Marijn van den Berg finished second and third on the same time, which tells the story of a finale that was tight enough to keep the front group together, but selective enough to create small splits immediately behind.

How the stage was decided

With the route classified as hilly and no summit finish, this was always likely to reward riders who could handle repeated terrain changes and still sprint or accelerate effectively at the finish. Van der Poel winning ahead of Gautherat and van den Berg on the same time suggests the decisive separation was not a long-range solo move, but a closing sequence where positioning and the ability to carry speed over rolling roads mattered most.

The first clear time gap came behind the podium. Per Strand Hagenes was fourth at 2 seconds, followed by Jasper Stuyven, Axel Mariault, Andrea Raccagni Noviero, Mattéo Vercher, Nicolas Breuillard and Davide Piganzoli, all also at 2 seconds. That is a small gap, but on a stage like this it matters because it shows the finish was not simply neutralised by a full peloton. The front three earned both the result and a slight cushion.

Van der Poel also becomes the GC leader after stage 1. Gautherat and van den Berg limited the damage by finishing on the same time as the stage winner, while the riders from fourth through tenth already sit 2 seconds down among those listed in the stage result.
