Turracher Höhe Pass cycling climb profile
Turracher Höhe Pass is a proper category 1 climb in Austria, and the numbers explain why it asks for respect rather than panic. At 13.2 km with an average gradient of 6.01%, it is long enough to punish impatience, but not so steep on average that it forces survival-mode riding from the start. The key detail is the spread between the average and the maximum gradient: the climb averages just over 6%, but reaches 9.96%, so the ride is not simply a metronomic tempo effort.
The climb starts at 752 m and tops out at 1545 m, with 793 m of net elevation gain. That gives it a clear endurance demand. You are not just managing a few steep pitches - you are managing the cost of sustained climbing over more than thirteen kilometres. For riders pacing by /glossary/ftp, the right approach is to treat the average gradient as the anchor and the near-10% sections as moments to absorb, not moments to attack.
How the gradient rides
A 6.01% average over 13.2 km means the pass will generally feel like a sustained seated climbing effort, but the 9.96% maximum changes the practical rhythm. If you ride the easier-feeling sections too hard, the steeper ramps will arrive with compound interest. That is where this climb can become expensive: not because any single gradient number is extreme, but because the climb is long enough for small pacing errors to accumulate.
The best mental model is a controlled threshold-adjacent climb with interruptions. Hold back slightly below the effort you think you can sustain early, especially if you are riding without exact power. The summit gain is large enough that perceived exertion will drift upward even if your actual output stays steady.
Pacing and gearing
Gear for the maximum gradient, not the average. A setup that feels comfortable at 6% can become too heavy when the road approaches 9.96%, especially late in the climb. The goal is to keep cadence from collapsing on the steeper ramps, because grinding there will raise muscular fatigue faster than it raises speed.
Practical approach:
- Start controlled and let the climb come to you.
- Use the 6.01% average as your pacing reference, not permission to over-ride.
- Keep an easier gear available for the steepest sections.
- Avoid chasing speed changes caused by gradient shifts.
- If using power, cap the surges rather than trying to hold one perfect number.
Turracher Höhe Pass rewards riders who can stay disciplined. With 13.2 km of climbing and nearly 800 m of vertical difference between start and summit, the fastest ride is likely the one that feels slightly too conservative early and still has pressure on the pedals near the top.
