Tim Wellens wins Lloyds Tour of Britain ahead of Askey

Tim Wellens won the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men 2026, taking the overall ahead of Lewis Askey in second and Jasper Stuyven in third.

That final podium tells the story of a race that did not offer a summit finish, but still shifted away from the pure flat-stage script once the route turned hillier in the final two days. The opening three stages were all listed as flat, with Lewis Askey winning Stage 1 in Lincoln, Tim Merlier taking Stage 2 into Skegness, and Olav Kooij winning Stage 3 in Beverley. From there, the race became less straightforward.

How Wellens won it

The structure of the race mattered. With three flat stages to open, the early GC picture was always likely to be shaped by riders who could survive the fast finishes and avoid losing position, rather than by a decisive climbing selection. Askey's Stage 1 win put him immediately into the centre of the race, and his eventual second place overall shows that his challenge was not just a one-day result.

The decisive terrain came late. Stage 4 from Helmsley to Leyburn was the first hilly stage, won by Cees Bol, and Stage 5 around Earlston was another hilly stage, won by Nils Politt. Neither was a summit finish, which is important. Without a final climb to make the selection for the race, the GC had to be decided through the accumulated stress of hilly racing: positioning, accelerations over repeated terrain, and the ability to finish the job after the sprinter-weighted opening half of the race.

That setup suited Wellens. The available results do not point to a single summit-finish knockout moment. Instead, his overall win reads as the product of being durable enough across the flatter opening stages, then strong enough when the race finally gained enough difficulty to separate the overall contenders. In a five-stage 2.Pro race, that balance is often the difference between a stage result and the general classification.
