Pogačar wins Vuelta mountain stage and opens clear overall lead
Tadej Pogačar won the fourth stage of the Spanish Vuelta in Andorra and moved into firm control of the overall race.
Pogačar takes control in Andorra
Tadej Pogačar turned the Spanish Vuelta's fourth stage into a major GC reset, winning Tuesday's tough mountain stage in Andorra and finishing 2 minutes, 39 seconds ahead of the chasers.
That margin matters because it was not just a stage win. It gave the defending Tour de France champion an overall lead of 3 minutes, 21 seconds over Primoz Roglic, shifting the race from an open early Grand Tour into one where the rest of the field now has to respond to a clearly established leader.
The tactical meaning is straightforward. A hard mountain stage created the first decisive separation, and Pogačar converted it into both time and control. For a rider described as seeking a sweep of Grand Tour titles, this is the kind of stage that changes the structure of the race: rivals can no longer simply track him and wait, because the gap is already large enough to force more aggressive decisions later.
