The climb begins at 630 m elevation and tops out at 2,023 m, meaning you are spending a significant portion of the final kilometres at genuine altitude. Even riders who are not altitude-sensitive will notice the air thinning in the upper third.
How the Gradient Unfolds
Lower Slopes
The opening kilometres tend to lure riders into a false sense of comfort. The gradient is relatively forgiving early on, and the road winds through valley terrain. This is not a place to push — it is a place to lock in a sustainable power output and resist the urge to respond to short punchy sections that will inevitably appear.
Mid-Section
The gap between the net elevation gain (1,393 m) and total ascent (2,459 m) makes clear that the middle portion is not a straight line upward. Expect stretches where the gradient eases or even dips, followed by sharp increases. These transitions are where poorly paced riders crack. A drop in gradient is not recovery — treat it as a chance to marginally reduce intensity, not to accelerate.
Upper Kilometres and the 28.6% Maximum
The maximum gradient of 28.6% is extreme. Sections that steep are not sustained — they are short walls that arrive with little warning. By the time you encounter the hardest ramps, you have already been climbing for a long time and your glycogen reserves are under pressure. Pre-position your gearing before you hit these walls. Trying to shift under full load on a 20%-plus gradient risks dropping a chain or stalling.
The final push to 2,023 m summit elevation is exposed. Wind and cooler temperatures are factors. Do not shed a layer in the valley that you will regret losing at the top.
Pacing Notes
- Set your ceiling early. With 27.7 km to cover, any effort above threshold in the first half compounds fatigue severely by the top. If you use power, target a percentage of your FTP that you can hold for a climb of this duration — not your short-climb number.
- Account for the total ascent, not just the net gain. The 2,459 m of total climbing is the more honest workload figure. Plan nutrition and hydration around that number.
- Pre-shift for the steep ramps. When gradient kicks above 15%, you want your easiest gear already selected. Anticipate, don't react.
- Altitude in the final third. Above roughly 1,800 m the effort feels harder for the same power output. This is normal. Do not chase a number; ride perceived effort alongside power.
Gearing Recommendations
Given the 28.6% maximum gradient, a compact chainset (50/34) paired with an 11-32 or 11-34 cassette is the minimum for most riders. Stronger climbers may manage with a 32 at the rear, but there is no prize for grinding through a 28% wall with inadequate gearing when your legs still have kilometres to give afterward.
