How the Gradient Unfolds
The lower slopes are deceptive. The road winds out of the valley with relatively gentle ramps that encourage riders to push a higher pace than they should. This is the classic Kirkstone trap: the opening kilometres feel well within threshold, and it's easy to overcook the early effort.
As the climb progresses, the gradient tightens progressively. The middle section introduces sustained steeper pitches that begin to accumulate fatigue in the legs. By the time the road kicks into its upper ramps — where that 17.24% maximum hits — any effort misspent in the lower third will be felt acutely. The steepest pitches on the upper climb are short but severe enough to force a significant gear change or a drop in cadence if you're not positioned correctly.

Pacing Notes

- Target 90–95% of FTP for the first half of the climb. The road's length of 6.9 km means even a modest overextension early will compound significantly by the summit.
- Reserve capacity for the upper pitches. The 17.24% maximum demands either a power surge or a very low gear. Neither is sustainable if your legs are already loaded.
- Use the undulations. Where the road briefly eases or dips, soft-pedal for 20–30 seconds rather than pushing through. These micro-recoveries matter on a climb of this length.
- Cadence: Aim to keep cadence above 70 rpm throughout. On the steepest ramps, dropping into your easiest gear to maintain cadence is preferable to grinding a big ratio and blowing up before the summit.
