The average gradient of 3.73% sounds manageable. Treat it as an invitation to push hard early and you will regret it. The maximum gradient reaches 27.04% — a number that belongs in a different conversation entirely. That pitch demands full attention and, for most riders, a very low gear ratio.

The total ascent figure of 3,094 m — nearly three times the net elevation gain — tells you something important: the road does not climb in a straight, linear ramp. Elevation is lost and regained along the way. You are not simply going uphill for 26.9 km. The terrain undulates, and sections of false flat or descent can tempt you into burning matches you will need later.

Lower Slopes

  • Target power, not feel. An average gradient of 3.73% across 26.9 km means energy management over roughly two hours or more for most club-level riders. Use a power meter or estimated zones from a recent FTP test as your anchor.
  • Budget for the wall. A 27.04% gradient requires a specific gear response. If your lowest ratio does not allow you to spin through a gradient that steep, momentum stalls and muscular fatigue spikes disproportionately. Consider a compact chainring paired with a wide-range cassette before attempting this road.
  • Respect the total ascent number. 3,094 m of total climbing versus 1,005 m net gain means elevation is surrendered and retaken repeatedly. Do not mistake descending sections for recovery — keep fuelling, and resist the urge to sprint out of each valley.
