Wout van Aert wins opening stage in Aalborg and takes Denmark lead

Wout van Aert opened the PostNord Tour of Denmark with a stage win in Aalborg, finishing first after 197.2 hilly kilometres on a start-and-finish route based in the city.

The profile mattered because this was not listed as a summit finish, but it was still selective enough to prevent a full top-ten group from arriving together. Van Aert won in 4h 10' 49', with Lukáš Kubiš second and Henrik Pedersen third on the same time. Tim Torn Teutenberg, Pier-André Côté, Christophe Laporte, Tomáš Kopecký and Søren Kragh Andersen also finished on the winner's time, making the decisive move an eight-rider front group rather than a broad bunch finish.

Behind them, the first visible split came at 17 seconds. Jensen Plowright took ninth and Anders Foldager tenth, both at that margin, which gives the stage an immediate GC consequence even if the race is only one day old.

GC impact

Van Aert also becomes the race leader after Stage 1. That is the cleanest possible opening for TVL men, who not only took the stage through Van Aert but also placed Christophe Laporte sixth on the same time.

The important read is that the hilly opening stage has already created separation. Eight riders are level on the road time from the stage-winning group, while the next finishers listed are 17 seconds down. In a live stage race, that is not decisive by itself, but it is enough to shape how the race is controlled from here: Van Aert has the jersey, TVL men have numbers near the front of the classification, and riders caught behind the first split are already chasing rather than simply waiting for later stages.
