Helambu is not a climb to treat as a single hard effort with a final sting. The numbers point to something more demanding: 32.8 km at an average gradient of 8.73%, rising from 781 m to 3647 m. That is a sustained, high-cost ascent where the main challenge is not one isolated ramp, but the accumulation of vertical gain over a long duration.
The HC rating is justified by the combination of length and steepness. A climb can be long and manageable if the gradient regularly backs off. Helambu does not give that impression from the profile data. With 2866 m of net elevation gain and 2987 m of total ascent, the road is fundamentally uphill from bottom to summit rather than a rolling approach with repeated resets.
How the gradient unfolds
The headline average of 8.73% matters because it sits high enough that there is very little free speed. On a climb this long, that means pacing mistakes compound quickly. The opening kilometres should be ridden below target intensity, not because they are necessarily easy, but because the full climb demands restraint before aggression.
The maximum gradient of 33.04% changes the way the climb should be read. Even if that steepest pitch is brief, it means the route contains gradients severe enough to force a different rhythm. You cannot assume a smooth tempo effort all the way up. Treat Helambu as an aerobic climb first and a strength climb second. The goal is to protect cadence and keep the effort stable, even when the road forces short spikes. For most riders, the sustainable effort needs to sit under FTP for a long time, with enough room to handle the steepest sections without tipping into repeated anaerobic surges.
Gearing should be chosen for the 33.04% maximum gradient, not the 8.73% average. That is the practical point many riders get wrong. A setup that feels comfortable on a steady 9% road may become unusable when the gradient sharply steepens. If you are deciding between gear options, choose the lower one. Preserving cadence is more valuable here than saving a little drivetrain range for flatter terrain that the profile does not really promise.
The summit elevation of 3647 m also matters for execution. Even without adding assumptions beyond the profile, the climb clearly finishes far above where it starts, so the final phase comes after major accumulated elevation gain. Fuel early, drink consistently, and avoid chasing short-term speed. On Helambu, the fastest ride is likely the one that looks almost conservative until the final third.
