Kooij converts in a messy finish

Olav Kooij took his first Tour de France victory on Stage 5 in Pau, coming through a disrupted finale with the best-timed sprint. Max Kanter finished second, with Tim Merlier third, after a late crash broke up the sprint trains and changed the shape of the run-in.

That detail matters because bunch finishes are usually won before the final acceleration. When the lead-out structure gets interrupted late, the advantage shifts away from the most controlled train and toward the rider who can read gaps, stay upright, and delay the sprint just long enough. Kooij did that better than the rest in Pau.

Yellow Jersey unchanged

Torstein Træen retained the Yellow Jersey, so the main race lead was not reshuffled on the stage. The bigger takeaway is that a stage expected to reward sprint organisation instead became a test of positioning and timing under pressure, and Kooij came out of it with a maiden Tour win.
