Tour TTT experiment puts innovation under scrutiny

A format tweak with real consequences

road.cc's latest piece looks at one of the Tour de France's ongoing attempts to modernise without cutting itself loose from the race's heavy dependence on history and tradition: an alternative approach to the team time trial.

The framing is important. A team time trial is never just another stage format because the effort is collective, and any change to how it is run can alter the balance between cooperation, fatigue management, and how much damage one rider can do to their own teammates. The headline quote - 'It’s tougher than a normal TTT because you kill each other' - gets to the core of the issue. This is not innovation as decoration. It changes the physical and tactical problem the riders have to solve.

That is why the question of whether the experiment worked matters. The Tour has shown it is willing to test new ways to shape the race, but the standard has to be higher than novelty. A format change has to create better racing without distorting the competition in a way that feels arbitrary.
