A new study by academics in Scotland has put a sharper frame around a small but potentially meaningful time trial variable: the following vehicle. According to the research, the aerodynamic benefit created by a vehicle behind a rider is directly linked to the vehicle's drag area.

That matters because a larger or less aerodynamic team car can create a greater advantage for the rider ahead. In a discipline built around controlled variables, that shifts the team car from background logistics into the performance environment itself.

Why it matters

The finding raises an uncomfortable fairness question for major time trials, including this year's Tour de France test referenced by road.cc. If vehicle shape and size can change the aerodynamic conditions around a rider, then equal following rules may not produce equal effects.

The proposed response is similarly direct: an expert has suggested a maximum CdA value for team cars and extended following distances. Both ideas target the same problem from different angles - either reduce the vehicle's capacity to influence airflow, or increase the gap enough to limit the benefit.

For data-driven riders, the takeaway is not that a team car decides a race by itself. It is that time trial performance is sensitive to details beyond the rider-bike system, and regulation has to keep pace with the physics.
