Inrng's Stage 12 preview frames the day as another sprint stage, and probably the last. That changes the incentives. When a race offers limited remaining opportunities for the fast finishers, their teams have a strong reason to keep the shape predictable rather than let an opportunistic move gain too much road.

The early racing described in the preview fits that tension. Mathieu van der Poel was the first to attack, but the sprinters' teams were not willing to let the wet roads turn the stage into a free-for-all. Several moves followed before the first hour covered 53km, with the preview noting a four-rider break.

Why it matters

The key point is control. Wet conditions can make a nominal sprint day harder to manage, because positioning, caution, and chase timing all become more costly. But if this is indeed the final sprint stage, the teams built around a bunch finish have little reason to be patient. Expect the tactical question to be less about whether attackers try, and more about how much rope the sprint teams are prepared to give them.
